LAUNCH OF THE DELHI CHAPTER AND FELICITATION PROGRAMME OF SHRI. OSCAR FERNANDES AND MR. ARMOOGUM PARSURAMEN IN NEW DELHI


Members of the Executive Council, Staff and Associates of the Global India Foundation hosted a dinner reception to felicitate Shri. Oscar Fernandes, Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resource Development, Mr. Armoogum Parsuramen, Director and UNESCO Representative to Bhutan, India, Maldives and Sri Lanka and Prof. Sukhadeo Thorat, Chairman of the University Grants Commission on Saturday, November 14, 2009, at the Court, India International Centre Annexe, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

The event marked the commencement of the Delhi Chapter of the Global India Foundation, and the coming together of academics, officials, technocrats, researchers, and other policy experts. The event began with informal interaction between the invitees. Professor Omprakash Mishra, Member-Secretary of GIF welcomed the guests before introducing the chief guests Shri Oscar Fernandes, Mr. Armoogum Parsuramen and Prof. Sukhadeo Thorat who were felicitated with a shawl and bouquet by Admiral P.J. Jacob. This followed a welcome speech by Admiral P J Jacob, Chairman, GIF who also spoke briefly about the Foundation. Shri Oscar Fernandes looked forward to the positive results of the collaboration with GIF and spoke about the importance of knowledge and education. Mr. Parsuramen also spoke at length about his humble beginnings in the Maldives, his meeting with the late Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi and his happiness over his return to the land of his ancestors. This was followed by a few words of encouragement by Prof Thorat, renowned especially for his expertise in agriculture, food, nutrition, inclusiveness and rural finance & development. He expressed support to the mission and activities of the Foundation. Dr. Sunil Chacko, GIF’s Vice President for North America and Japan briefed the guests on the partnership with the Parliamentary Forum on HIV/AIDS and the efforts to learn from the experience of combating HIV/AIDS in India in order to apply that knowledge to other chronic diseases prevention, such as stroke, cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases. Further, the collaboration aims at joint learning for management of sensitive issues with colleagues in Sub-Saharan Africa.
